They loudly amuse themselves by hurling insults and epithets — the words “dick,” “balls” and “ass” being the etymological anchors of their attacks — all for the express purpose of making one another laugh. They seem to be having such a great time that you’d feel like a monster alerting them to this one unfortunate fact: Men just aren’t funny.”

“This is a truly magnificent record, and I think it’s going to end up being the album for which we remember Vampire Weekend. Years from now, they won’t be remembered as “that band who sang about commas and wore boat shoes and had a chandelier on the cover of that one album,” but rather as “that band that made that record with the picture of New York on the cover that kept me company when I was living alone, had a good job but was really unhappy and about ready to give up on my dreams at twenty-five.” Anyone who can’t mention Vampire Weekend without mentioning Paul Simon and upper-crust snobbery in the same breath is now officially missing the point by a large margin—not that they ever grasped it in the first place.

Modern Vampires of the City is the work of a band that is so much more than the band that made Vampire Weekend or even Contra, so let’s all just take a minute to bask in the glory of this album and stop talking about the fact that they went to an Ivy League college and are a bunch of light-skinned people making African-inspired music. That’s really not who they are now anyway: Ezra Koenig doesn’t want to be Paul Simon anymore, I think he wants to be the voice of his generation. Personally, I’m more than willing to let him vie for the title.”

“Modern Vampires is not a musical comedy of manners. It’s an expertly executed weird-pop album about death and fear and the unknown. And it’s beautiful.

This is frightening stuff, but the album comes across as something warm and comforting and welcoming. It dangles us over the abyss, but then it pulls us up and gives us a hug. And that hug mostly comes in the form of the melodies, which are somehow even prettier than the ones on the last two Vampire Weekend albums. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Koenig and Rostam Batmanglij are just dangerously sharp hooksmiths, guys whose songs slip into your soul upon contact. Musically, it’ll be a while before I know where Modern Vampires ranks with the band’s first two albums, since both of them proved way more durable than anyone expected at the time. But after a few days of constant rotation, the album already feels like an old friend, just like the other two do.

So once again, Vampire Weekend have given us a glimmering and immediately lovable pop record, one that has so many currents and thoughts and feelings running through it that certain lines might not make sense to us until a random lyric emerges from iTunes shuffle and slaps us upside the head a year from now. They’ve done it again — three for three, three amazing albums in three attempts. We’re very, very lucky to have them around.”
